Biography:
Arsalan Alavi was born in Kerman/Iran in 1982. He received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Iran. His first research study was focused on topology optimization. In particular, he managed to develop computer-based codes to solve the topology optimization of structures under dynamic loads. His experience in topology issue leads him to propose topology optimization main idea as a suitable design tool for the preliminary design of tall buildings. He has several publications proposing analytic-based algorithms for optimal design of high-rise structures. In a joint research study with some well-known experts from Kyoto University (Japan), Imperial College London (London, UK), and University of Naples Federico II (Naples, Italy), they have just recently proposed a closed-form solution for the optimal design of outrigger-braced skyscrapers. He is also interested in structural dynamics, in particular active control. He has started an in-depth study on control-structure integrated design (CSID) for more than three years. CSID is an effective, yet challenging, approach able to optimize the structural and control objectives simultaneously. He could develop a CSID algorithm which gives the optimal values for both structural and control components considering their interaction; the results of this study are presented in a journal paper.
